We’ve noticed a significant uptick in the number of stories like this one in the Wall Street Journal, all with the same message – many of your employees are carefully eyeing the exits.

With the significant changes in the work force that many companies had to go through during this economic recession, everything from downsizing to reduced cash compensation to fewer benefits, many workers were happy just to have a job. Now, as the economy slowly improves, many disgruntled employees who waited out the worst of it are ready to jump ship.  So it shouldn’t be a surprise that about one in three employees are seriously evaluating leaving their job according to a survey from human-resources consultant Mercer LLC. That’s result is up from 23% in 2005, which was the last time Mercer conducted the survey.  In addition the survey says that 21% have a negative view of their employer and have largely checked out of their job, even if they aren’t actively looking for another one.

Here’s another one:  Nearly two-thirds of employees are testing the job market, according to the 2011 Deloitte Human Capital Trends report.  And finally, according to a recent survey from Business News Daily.com, 84% of American employees plan to look for new jobs in 2011.

Many employers are quick to blame the economic recession for the root of the problem, but studies report that workers have not been happy in corporate jobs since the early 1990′s. Many “experts” believe senior management is disconnected from the fact that their employees are struggling to make ends meet, most with two income families and still facing economic shortages in their household. Increased living costs, higher gas prices, and shrinking home values has resulted in lost plans for retirement, college, and nice vacations as many workers are focused on living paycheck to paycheck, while struggling to keep the old clunker running, worn out appliances working, and going another month before addressing homes in need of renovation.  I’m not sure that there is a good solution for making people happier right now.
